Using Kanban and JIT in your business should result in a more even production flow. JIT will ensure the correct material is delivered at the correct time. Kanban will mean that WIP is being processed on a more even flow. Apply Takt-times to set leveled production targets.

Modern manufacturing ideology is all about variety of output as opposed to bulk processing. Use batch size breakdowns to allow for a more varied output. Under lean manufacturing the optimal batch target is a batch of one.

In the real world we would all like to achieve this target, but with machine set up times and actually machine run times this is often not the case. In machine manufacturing like aerospace the optimal batch size may be a batch of 4, whereas in electronics it can be anything between 5-1000. Use common sense in applying batch sizes. What works in a text book for one industry may not be the same for all.
