Back to Motivational Main Menu From the late 1950's through the 1960's Frederick Herzberg was involved in extensive motivational studies. The bulk of Herzberg's work produced the 'Hygiene Factors'. HYGIENE FACTORS - The essence of the hygiene factors was a basic set of factors which employees regard as being essential. The hygiene factors cover not only a clean and safe environment being of vital importance to deter illness but also other conditions such as working practices which promote employee satisfaction. MOTIVATION FACTORS - The motivation factors are ways in which the business encourages employee satisfaction. The works of Herzberg are very similar to McGregor, except where Theory X and Y could be classed as generalisation, the works of Herzberg were based on strong statistical research.
